How promo codes actually work

A promo code is a tracking string. Type it in the sign-up box and the operator credits your account with whatever offer that code was mapped to on that day. Nothing more, nothing less. The bonus that follows is not created by the code, it's just gated behind it.

What the code is doing

Two jobs. First, it tags your account to the affiliate that referred you, so the affiliate gets paid a share of what you lose. Second, it selects which welcome offer variant applies to your account, out of the three or four the operator is running that week. That's it. There is no "secret code" that unlocks a bigger bonus than the site's own homepage. The best a code can do is match the biggest publicly available offer, which is what the codes on our promo hub already do.

Why the same brand has different codes on different sites

Affiliates negotiate their own codes so their traffic is tracked separately. The offer attached to each code is usually identical, but sometimes an affiliate has a slightly better version, a first-deposit boost or a rakeback bump, because that operator wants the affiliate's audience. Compare the small print on the operator's own site against the code you're using. If they match, the code is doing its job. If the operator's own offer is bigger, use the operator's version.

What the terms are hiding

The bonus number is not the story. The wagering multiplier is. A $500 bonus at 40x rollover means you have to wager $20,000 through the book before any of that $500 is withdrawable. A $200 bonus at 5x means you wager $1,000. The second one is the better deal even though the headline is smaller. Read the wagering multiplier, the market exclusions (some books ban roulette and blackjack from contributing), and the expiry clock (usually 7 to 30 days). All three are in the terms, none are on the promo landing page.

Rakeback vs matched deposit vs free bet

Three different products, all called "the welcome bonus". A matched deposit is bonus money with wagering attached. Free bets are risk-free stakes where only the winnings are yours, and only after the stake settles. Rakeback is a percentage of your losses returned as cash or credit with no rollover. Rakeback is worth more per dollar than matched-deposit bonuses for anyone who plans to bet regularly. See our reduced juice vs bigger bonus for the math.

Our take

The code matters for tracking. The offer matters for value. The terms decide whether the offer is real. Read the terms first, then decide if the code is worth using at all. Verified codes for the operators on our list live on the promo codes hub, each one checked against the operator's own current landing page.
